heard today carpetright have taken a big knife to their southern ireland operations, trimming the fat right to the bone poss 12 stores to close if not all of them, rummors about 4 in the north even a couple on the mainland.

If their feeling it, things must be bad

some here may think this is good news but have a thought for the ppl put out of work not all the staff were that bad, even some of their fitters were good lad's.

I was talking to a shop owner a couple of months ago that had hoped that a couple of shops within the area would buckle and fall.I said that the footfall isnt their like it was years ago.The ordinary folk and the geniune cash payers are more interested in paying the necessary bills and having a good time at weekends before the less important factors according to flooring are discussed.Having said that window fitters etc must have a harder time than us,at least we get the repeat custom every so often, forget guarantees, peeps get fed up and want new (hopefully).

hobbit i will find out if its true on Monday

Anyway, if they was to shut stores i dought it would be because of the lack of work at the moment. CR are big enough to allow them stores to trade at a loss for the next xxx amount of years if they wanted. I would guess if they was closing them it would because they have never made any money?

Im guessing here tho so could be wrong?

Maybe this is an opening for fitters to open small shops in towns were they have closed, small businesses need a lot less footfall to feed them than large warehouse opperations

I second that, we need more specialised shops - not more "stack 'm high, sell 'm low" outlets

Maybe the 75 percent off has caught up and clickin at the heels. The store has got to "house" stock otherwise it doesnt give anyone that likes to traditionally walk-round and want to show the wife!,a grand day out, but if things get really tough then they will have to rob peter to pay paul by sharing stock from other stores, meaning that re stocking on a great scale is out of the equation. On a lighter note at least if they are advertising nationally then some customers may give the smaller more caring retailers a chance to quote so in effect it may be classed as free advertising.
