Hi lads is there anyway you can lay safety flooring directly on to mdf chipboard sub floor or does it have to be over plyed first every time ? cheers.

Should be 6mm ply also but if over boarding to create a barrier which you are then you could use 4mm plywood to save money.

I heard a few months back that 4mm ply isn't acceptable for laying floors on anymore, is there any truth in this? Personally I don't like using it anyway papering over cracks comes to mind with that stuff.

A firm I've done work for in the past had me skim chipboard with feather finish and then fit lvt a few times. Always seemed to get away with it!!! Wouldn't recommend it though

I have laid 100s of metres of altro on feather finish direct to chipboard after being sanded flat with a trio sander all with an email from altro to say it will be ok that was 5years ago in a school canteen and kitchen andis still down tight, wouldnt make a habit of it though

Not saying you can't I wouldn't do it though. Was always told to use 6mm as it is stronger, this was from the college tutors and the guys I used to work with when I was an apprentice. The guy I mentioned said he'd been told this a few years ago.

Couple of years ago I didnt even like usinb 6mm ply as it was junk but the new sp101 is fine at 3.2mm or 5.5mm if the floor was a new flat floor I would have no problems using 3.2mm sp101 for lvt or sheet vinyl

Most manufacturers say to use 6mm Minimum. they say this as 6mm levels out better than 4mm. However, if the floor is already flat then why use 6mm?

Also, the manufacturer who vinyl it is, well they are not guaranteeing your subfloor prep. YOU ARE.

If it was me i would use 4mm over chipboard. But like i say, most manufacturers say to use 6mm.
